What are Integrated Cancer Services (ICS)?
Integrated Cancer Services are regional collaborations set up in three metropolitan and five regional Victoria sites. These have been established by the Department of Health (DH) to implement the Government's Cancer Services Framework across Victoria. The Framework outlines an integrated services model for metropolitan and regional cancer services, which focuses on delivering the right treatment and support to patient as early as possible and throughout their cancer journey.

What is the Western and Central Melbourne ICS?
The Western & Central Melbourne Integrated Cancer Service (WCMICS) is one of three metropolitan (Southern and North & Eastern being the other two) and five regional ICS established by the DH to implement the Government’s Cancer Services Framework across Victoria. The WCMICS comprises of Melbourne Health, the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre (the host institution), Royal Women’s Hospital, St Vincent’s Health Melbourne, Western Health and Werribee Mercy Hospital. The Royal Children’s Hospital, also a member of the Paediatric ICS, is part of the WCMICS. The broader cancer and support service sector within the WCMICS – private hospitals, palliative care providers, general practitioners and community health services – is expected to become increasing involved in ICS activities over time.

How is the WCMICS governed?
Governance of the WCMICS is through the Governance Committee (GC) which provides broad oversight, direction and leadership. The Group is chaired by Ms Kathryn Cook (Chief Executive, Western Health) and comprises of CEOs and their representatives from all constituent hospital/health services.

Who oversees the clinical side of WCMICS activities?
The Clinical Management Advisory Committee (CMAC) is the key source of expert clinical and service advice and assistance to the Director, Directorate and GC. The CMAC is chaired by Associate Professor Michael Green.

Can consumers, patients and families contribute to WCMICS?
Yes. A Consumer Register has been established, and we are in the process of ensuring each of our committees has at least one consumer representative. Contact Nyree Dillon on (03) 9656 2788 for more information.

What's in it for me?
For patients - we believe that patient care can be improved through access to expert care, based on the latest research as close to home as possible.
For clinicians - the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues locally will enable a coordinated approach to care, sharing the cancer burden, collaboration in projects to improve services, and improving resources where they are most needed.
