The Western & Central Melbourne Integrated Cancer Service

The Western & Central Melbourne Integrated Cancer Service, or WCMICS is a partnership between six public health care organisations - Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, the Royal Melbourne Hospital, the Royal Women's Hospital, St Vincent's Hospital, Werribee Mercy and Western Health. The work of the WCMICS is directed by the vision outlined in the WCMICS 2008-11 Strategic Plan and the Victorian Government’s Cancer Action Plan.

Our Objectives

Originally established to implement the Victorian Government's Cancer Services Framework across our region, the WCMICS is now tasked with the implementation of pertinent elements of Victoria's Cancer Action Plan. In line with the overall aims of the Cancer Action Plan and the WCMICS strategic direction. Our main objectives are to:

  • Meet the needs of people with cancer living within its geographic area, as well as in other metropolitan and regional ICS who use WCMICS services, by facilitating the delivery of consistent and high quality cancer care;
  • Enhance integration and coordination of cancer services within its area, including the development of clear and formal communication processes, referral patterns and relationships
    • between its primary, secondary and tertiary services
    • as well as with other ICS services; and
  • Develop and manage systems to ensure that resources are provided, coordinated and managed to fulfil needs and expectations to the best possible extent.

Our Governance

The WCMICS is governed by two key committees (the Governance Committee and the Clinical Management Advisory Committee). The WCMICS Directorate is responsible for the day to day co-ordination and management of WCMICS activities.

Clinical Management Advisory Committee

The Clinical Management Advisory Committee (CMAC) is the key source of expert clinical and service advice to the Director and also to the GC. It is also responsible for advising on and providing broad oversight of WCMICS service projects and initiatives. Its members are drawn from across the WCMICS clinical and hospital spectrum. It is chaired by Associate Professor Michael Green of the Western Hospital and the Royal Melbourne Hospital. The Deputy Chair is Professor Gillian Duchesne of the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.
