Strategic Direction 2008-11
The work of the WCMICS is directed by the vision outlined in the WCMICS 2008-11 Strategic Plan and the Victoria's Cancer Action Plan (VCAP).

The WCMICS 2008-11 Strategic Plan was released in late 2008 following a consultative development process. The Plan sets out the WCMICS’ overarching goals for 2008-11 and the measures required to demonstrate progress against the Plan (click here to view the WCMICS One Page Strategic Plan). WCMICS activities in 2008-11 will be focused around four key priority areas:
- Integration Of Care
An improved patient journey that is fully integrated across all services is a key goal of the WCMICS work program. In addition to new initiatives, WCMICS will build upon existing work programs including the care pathway projects, cancer services positions and strengthening multidisciplinary meetings program.
- Data and Information Availability
The identification of data/information availability as a key priority area reflects the need for clinical management systems and accurate clinical information to support the delivery of quality cancer care. This priority area strives to deliver the vision of the WCMICS Information Strategy.
- Collaboration within & Across ICS
Improved collaboration within and across ICS is key to the delivery of consistent patient management across WCMICS. Greater linkage with other ICS to minimise duplication and facilitate greater information sharing and the pooling of resources to achieve common goals is essential.
- Supportive Care Screening & Services
The WCMICS Supportive Care Strategy focuses on the development of sustainable models of supportive care, including supportive care screening, as outlined in the VCAP.

Victoria's Cancer Action Plan (VCAP) was released in December 2008. VCAP outlines the vision for cancer reform in Victoria, with the overall objective of increasing the five year survival rate by a further 10% to 74% by 2015. To achieve this goal, targets have been set and investments made across four key action areas:
Action Area 1: Reducing major cancer risk factors in the population and maximising effective screening (PREVENTION)
Action Area 2: Ensuring rapid translation of research into effective treatments and clinical care (RESEARCH)
Action Area 3: Investing in innovative treatments and technologies and sustainable integrated care systems (TREATMENT)
Action Area 4: Supporting and empowering patients and their carers throughout their cancer journey (SUPPORT) |
