Peter Mac
The Head & Neck Service focuses on assessment and treatment of all malignancies of the head and neck region and only utilises staff that specialise in head and neck cancer.

Our collaborative team of specialist medical, radiation and surgical oncologists, dental oncologists, plastic surgeons, speech pathologists, specialist oncology nurses, dietitians and social workers, all work together to offer patients individual and sensitive treatment.

The Peter Mac hub and spoke model of service provision works well with managing uncommon tumours such as head and neck cancers. Using this model, patients have the benefit of the collective experience of a centralised multidisciplinary team at Peter Mac. Where possible, we facilitate local treatment delivery and post-treatment care.

Peter Mac has a dedicated Dental Oncology unit, principally associated with the needs of the patients undergoing treatment in the Head and Neck, Haematology and Skin services. Dental Oncology is staffed by part-time registered dental specialists and provides many services including - assessment of the oral cavity and teeth prior to radiotherapy and chemotherapy, preparation of the oral cavity prior to radiotherapy and diagnostic assessment of intra-oral lesions - e.g. Biopsies.

Royal Melbourne Hospital
The Royal Melbourne Hospital provides comprehensive surgical oncology care for Head and Neck cancer patients. Our model of care is multidisciplinary and comprises all the surgical disciplines involved in Head & Neck Cancer Care: Otolaryngology, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. A Consultant Radiation Oncologist participates in patient care planning, in collaboration with the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. There are dedicated Radiologists, Pathologists, Speech Pathologists, Dieticians, Prosthodontists, Prosthetics and Special Needs Dentists. Other medical and surgical specialists available include Neuro, General and Cardio-Thoracic Surgeons, Intensive Care, Palliative Care and General Physicians.

Surgical treatment is provided for patients with cancer of the mouth, nose, jaws, throat and upper aerodigestive tract, the thyroid gland, skin of the head and neck including melanoma, salivary glands, sinuses, ears and sarcomas of the head and neck. A dedicated team is available for the management of patients with skull base tumours.

The Royal Melbourne Hospital has a close research relationship with The Walter & Eliza Hall Institute (WEHI), the Ludwig Cancer Institute and the University of Melbourne. There is a strong commitment to teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

St. Vincent’s Hospital
St. Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne has long been recognized as a centre of excellence for the management of Head and Neck cancer. Multidisciplinary care is essential for facilitating the difficult journey of head and neck cancer patients and St. Vincent’s multidisciplinary head and Neck clinic runs on a weekly basis and provides a forum between the patient, Head and neck surgeons, Radiation Oncologists, Plastic and reconstructive surgeons, Dental oncologists, Radiologists, Pathologists, Speech pathologists, Dieticians and Palliative Care specialists. This care is facilitated by our specialist head and neck Nurse co ordinator.

St. Vincent’s has close relationships with Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute, Box Hill Hospital and the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. St. Vincent’s is also a tertiary referral centre for Geelong, Ballarat, Shepparton, Albury - Wodonga and Tasmania.

St. Vincent’s Hospital Head and Neck unit has an international reputation in the management of Skull base and paranasal sinus tumours and for the performance of both Transoral laser surgery for aerodigestive tract malignancies and open conservation partial laryngectomy. Functional outcomes for patients are optimized through cooperation with the internationally renowned plastic and reconstructive team at St. Vincent’s and the Bernard O’Brien Institute for Microsurgery.

Western Health
Our Head & Neck service at Western Health provides comprehensive multidisciplinary care, ranging from diagnosis, management and treatment of Head & Neck cancers.

The multidisciplinary team comprises of core members from Western Health and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, these include ENT Surgeons, Reconstructive Surgeons, Medical Oncologist, Radiation Oncologist, Diagnostic Radiologist, Dietitian, Speech Pathologist, with access to Anatomical Pathologist, Social Work, Palliative Care, Psychologist and other Allied Health services where appropriate.

Western Health is a leading advocate for improving health outcomes in the West and is an acute teaching hospital, affiliated with University of Melbourne, with more than 300 beds providing clinical expertise and leadership across a comprehensive range of services.

 

Our Population

WCMICS is one of nine Integrated Cancer Services (ICS) funded by the Victorian Department of Health.

The ICS aim to improve patient care and outcomes by focusing on delivering the right treatment and support to patients throughout their cancer journey. The ICS play a role in delivering components of Victoria’s Cancer Action Plan (VCAP).

WCMICS extends from central Melbourne to Werribee, covering the inner municipalities of Melbourne and Yarra, the middle municipalities of Brimbank, Maribyrnong, Moonee Valley and Hobson’s Bay and the outer north-western municipalities of Melton and Wyndham. The population of the WCMICS region is one of the fastest growing in Victoria and makes up approximately 26% of Victoria’s total population. The region’s population is also characterised by its:

  • Aging population structure
  • Relatively high levels of socio-economic disadvantage
